The Durning Library is an important part of our local community.

Lambeth Council is currently considering the future organisation of its library service. We know that there are to be severe budget cuts and if the community does not step in, our library may not survive.

As the library’s Friends, we need your help to decide how best to plan for its future, and so we need to hear your views, whether or not you use the library.

Update of the Fire License Review

As we've previously mentioned the Metropolitan Police asked Lambeth Council to review Fire nightclubs license. We submitted our views, noting our desire for Fire to be a better neighbour to residents and spoke on the day for residents.

The committee ruled that Fire should loose its license for 6 weeks and a number of conditions were added to the license. The club was closed until 15th December 2011.

As part of the concessions from the club they committed to sharing the numbers of the duty manager residents so they could be contacted whenever the club is open. The numbers are:

Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea open days: November 24-25

Two open days are being held next week about the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea redevelopments on 24-25 November.

The multi-million pound redevelopments that make up Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea, or VNEB, form one of London’s largest regeneration programmes – second only to the Olympic site. Over the next twenty years major investment will transform the area bringing with it new businesses and jobs, public spaces, homes and leisure facilities.

This is a complex and long term project with different types of improvements taking place over a number of years. The open days on 24 and 25 November will bring the key people from each area of expertise into one location, making it as easy as possible for local people and local groups to find the information that interests them most.

The VNEB open day events are free and open to all and a great chance to discover:
o The most up-to-date information about the VNEB redevelopments.
o An update on the Northern line extension that will link the whole area to the Tube network.
o A chance to learn more about proposed improvements for pedestrians, cyclists, and local public transport users.
o Information about planned improvements to existing streets and a new linear park.
o A 3D model of the whole VNEB area.
o An opportunity to discuss proposals with the VNEB strategy board.

The open days will be held between 3pm-8pm on Thursday 24 November and 8am-6pm on Friday 25 November at Market Towers, 1 Nine Elms Lane, Vauxhall, SW8 5NQ.

The nearest tube and rail station is Vauxhall. Market Towers is the tall building on the south-western side of the Vauxhall one-way system. Use Exit 6 from Vauxhall tube station and it is the first building across Nine Elms Lane.

The next Oval Safer Neighbourhood Team meeting - 21st September

I'm pleased to be sending you notice of the next Oval Safer Neighbourhood Panel. We will be meeting on Wednesday 21st September at 19:00 in Frank O'Neil House on Clapham Road, this is a public meeting. I have attached an agenda.

A Safer Neighbourhood Panel meeting is the primary forum for residents to receive an update from their local Safer Neighbourhood Team, including ward sergeant Jon Cummins, and to feed into the work of the local police and identify areas for them to focus on. The meetings are a valuable opportunity to work alongside our police officers in making Oval a safer place to live and your input will be very much appreciated.

VNEB - Battersea Power Station future in doubt?

The Telegraph has run the story: The future of Battersea Power Station is in doubt again after lenders to the Irish property company attempting to redevelop the site called in Ernst & Young as advisors.

As we have constantly voiced - the building of the Northern Line Extension is based on pretty big funding assumptions, including the redevelopment of the power station. We cannot move forward with Northern Line Extention until we are confident the private funded element of the extension is financially sound.

The tax payer, and local communities should NOT loose out when developers realise they have a short fall. Community funds from S106 and CIL payments cannot be eaten by overspend.

Fire Clubs licence to be reviewed

We are appalled by the violence across London and our thoughts are with affected residents and businesses.

So far Oval appears relativly unaffected by the unrest, but ofcourse Brixton was not so lucky and Lambeth Council is working with Brixton residents and community groups to clean up Brixton and get shops open again. Steve Reed has issued a statement on the unrest and our determination to show solidarity as a community again a small minority.

Recruiting Truth About Youth Associates

We are looking for 10 Young Associates to be on placement with us until July 2012. If you are a writer, actor, producer, dancer, director, designer, technician, or film-maker aged 16-21ys old then we want to hear from you.

You will receive a bursary and will be mentored by a professional practitioner supporting you to develop and enhance skills in your chosen field.

As a Young Associate you will earn a Silver Arts Award, have access to free rehearsal space to pursue your own ideas, lead projects and finally assist in Truth About Youth’s major performances throughout 2012.

The Co-operative Foundation’s Truth about Youth programme challenges and changes negative perceptions about young people, by supporting projects which enable them to work with adults, the media and the wider community. As a Young Associate, you will become a Truth About Youth Ambassador, representing Oval House and promoting the positive image of London’s young.

All you need to do is email a CV and covering letter, detailing relevant experience (previous placements/castings/education and training) and telling us why you think you would make a strong Young Associate for Truth about Youth. Our lives have rather been overtaken by VNEB (Vauxhall and Nine Elms opportunity area) and the current northern line extension consultation.

We organised a public meeting in June with Val Shawcross, your Assembly Member, to review the consultation with over 100 residents and since then have had a series of meetings with TfL, treasury holdings, IMPACT residents group and Northern Line Extension Action Group to scrutinise the route proposals and the consultation in general.

Due to pressure from your representatives and residents the consultation has been extended to the 10^th August. Have your say on the proposals at http://www.northernlineextension.com/

Last weekend we met residents for a social in Claylands Green with Impact residents association to further discuss their concerns, especially around the proposed ventilation shaft, and also the plans for improvements to Claylands Green.

We are now regularly meeting Steve Reed, leader of the Council, who is on the VNEB development board before board meetings to review the agenda and provide a local steer. We are pushing very hard for a guaranteed 10% of all development money to go into a community pot to secure a lasting legacy for local residents from the development. Otherwise we fear the Northern Line Extension will overspend and take all the community money.

We have also met with TfL on a number of occasions to push for a radical solution to the Vauxhall Gyratory, reinstalling two way traffic to take some of the speed out and also for a Vauxhall Square with active shop front to be considered.

Kennington park is awarded Green Flag status

Busy week in Oval

Its been a busy week for us, with our community meeting on the Northern Line Extension on Thursday, Ovals action day on Saturday with the Vauxhall Labour Party and today the Vauxhall Park fete.

The good news is immediately following Thursdays meeting TfL agreed to extend the consultation by a further 10 days (on top of the original extension).

We'll share as much information as we can on the continuing consultations here - and will be sharing the outcomes from the meeting as soon as possible.

Todays Vauxhall Park fate, organised by the Friends of Vauxhall Park, went really well. Despite earlier rain we all stayed dry and the sun came out. Highlights included some fantastic robot bollards and bins, which the children really enjoyed, and the lovely cakes! We were pleased to run our first Labour stall at the event.

Vauxhall gyratory

Val Shawcross, our GLA member, strongly supports change to, and the taming of, the gyratory. She is keen to get local support for her talks with TFL, which are currently on going as the possibility of change to the gyraory is being discussed as part of all the developments.

Oval Farmers’ Market Celebrates Permanent Residency

This Saturday Oval Farmers’ Market celebrated the granting of permanent planning permission after previously only having temporary permission.

To mark the event the Mayor of Lambeth, Mayor Valcarcel, was in attendance and met traders and the market’s organisers. The weather was pleasant and the atmosphere was friendly as customers enjoyed doing their shopping, meeting the Mayor and learning about the history of and future plans for Oval Farmers’ Market.

Located on the grounds of St Marks church (opposite Oval tube station) and open every Saturday from 10:00 until 15:00 (come rain or shine!), the market has over 20 stalls selling fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, confectionery and dairy all sourced from the local area.

The market was helped into existence by a local community group, The Oval Partnership (www.ovalpartnership.org.uk) and is run by City and Country Farmer’s Markets (www.weareccfm.com).

Rob Hicks, Treasurer of the Oval Partnership said “the farmer’s market attracts a really eclectic crowd every Saturday - great quality local food and drink is really important to the people of Oval. The farmer’s market is now an important part of our community, I’m glad this has been reflected in the granting of permanent planning permission.”

The farmer’s market is part of a wider public realm strategy that will transform the area where it is held. The Oval Partnership is currently raising money to undertake a historical impact assessment of the area before undertaking further fundraising to finance the transformation. Today Jack and I met up with our assembly member Val Shawcross and fellow Labour Councillors Mark and Stephen from Princes Ward to discuss with officers residents concerns of the roads near Oval tube and Kennington Park.

Issues included:

Potholes
Cycle safety (I was clearly testing this issue personally)
Pedestrian crossings
The bus lane

Tonight protesters stopped democracy. By preventing the full council in public we couldn't discuss important issues around Lambeth's budget. Members of the public couldn't hear us debate. This is a massive shame.

I was also due to make my maiden speech. Not wanting to waste my hard work I thought I'd post it!

I am so pleased that only £1 million of the £37 million of cuts this year has resulted in straight cuts to services. Despite scare mongering on management costs, where possible, cuts have been made to costs before services. This is because we know how important our front line services are to residents – and to a small group of our most vulnerable residents these services are a true lifeline.

For these residents front line services are make or break, for them and their families. They often don’t participate in resident engagement. But our residents who did respond to our consultation on the budget, told us they want to protect social services for children, disabled people, older people and those most disadvantaged. This is their priority and this is our priority, and we have protected core services to these groups.

The voices arguing for our playgrounds, parks and libraries are articulate, passionate and informed and most importantly understand the decision making process. We are fortunate to have so many dedicated groups like these in Oval. Many of these groups understand the opportunity the co-operative council affords us to not withdraw services, but to deliver them differently.

However, you rarely find the users of some our most important services campaigning outside the Town Hall. They probably won’t be writing to the South London Press and they probably wont lobby their local Councillors or MPs. But our job as Councillors is to listen not just to the informed few – but to represent our whole community.

We haven’t got time to moon over the what might have been. In the short space of time officers and councillors have had to respond to these cuts, they have had to be creative, collaborative and bold. To think about services in different ways. And we have achieved this because we know what it would mean to many of our residents if they lost vital core services.

We have ensured the continued provision of essential services for our most vulnerable children and adults. Children with special educational needs and disabilities have been protected. There will be a new Livity special needs school. We are not closing any childrens centres.

Unlike Councils like Devon County Council we have protected services to the victims of Domestic violence.

When we lost 100% of the funding for our team which supports residents with HIV – we said it was too important to loose and made the decision to find the money from elsewhere.

Despite the government cutting the grant for free swimming we have managed to part fund a programme that allows under 16’s and over 60’s to swim for just £1.

We are investing £106m in Housing despite the government not being able to commit to the ALMO funding.

We are delivering a £100 million investment programme into our schools despite the government cancelling the building schools for the future project.

We have protected the eligibility criteria for adult care services so the council will continue to provide care for residents in both substantial and critical need.

Targeted youth services are protected and the government watchdog Ofsted rated Lambeth Council among the best in the country in its work to help disaffected teenagers into education, training or work.

I didn't become a Labour Cllr to make cuts to valued services, but I did become a Cllr to make sure that when there are tough decisions to be made- we make the right decisions which prioritise the most vulnerable in our community.

S106 on the Vauxhall Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area

Below is correspondance for consultation by the GLA about S106 (planning obligation) payments and the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea opportunity area planning framework. Comments to be received by the Mayor by 25 March.

We are concerned about the below on page 8:

"It is proposed that developer tariff/CIL contributions should be pooled and that the VNEB Strategy Board should have input into the prioritisation of projects and the allocation of funds as the development and specific infrastructure requirements are taken forward. Until an OA CIL is adopted, it is proposed that Section 106 tariff contributions should be linked to “the provision of infrastructure to support the development of the OA” and not to specific projects or areas."

It is important that Lambeth residents benefit from these developments and are not adversly impacted. We need strong representation to ensure Vauxhall is at the heart of decision making and Lambeth residents don't see all the CIL go to the northern line extention.

We are keen that the needs of Vauxhall now, and in the future, are properly considered. Vauxhall Square consultation

On Friday Jack and I got up bright and early and went to a consultation meeting, with planning officers and members of the public, on the Vauxhall Square development proposals.

The plans include a linear walk linking the site with the proposed linear park (in the overall plans for the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area), a public square, residential flats and shops.

Kennington Park Estate Resident Engagement

On Saturday 12th February Jack met with residents and staff at Kennington Park Estate to help develop community programme at the Community Centre.

Over 20 residents turned out to shape this plan and to ensure that the right services are offered including women's networks and events, things for young people to do and how to create local partnerships with neighbouring amenities.

This programme is the start of a process which Hyde Southbank Homes have initiated as they recognise that resident led programme building is the key to success.

Jack and Jane will continue to support the efforts to involve residents in decision making and taking control of their services.

Octave Tower - Win for Resident Power!

Last week the Secretary of State upheld the Inspector's decision to dismiss the appeal from the Bondway developers for the Octave Tower. The inspector's decision was based on the grounds of being overbearing, impact on local parks, lack of open space and children's play space after Lambeth's planning committee rejected the proposals under pressure from a vocal and campaigning public.

The Octave Tower, proposed for the Bondway self storage site next to Vauxhall gyratory, was deemed too dense and lacked amenity and public open space, especially for children living in the family sized properties.

The Inspector did not feel that Vauxhall Park would not be significantly harmed by overshadowing or overlooking but it was the intensity of extra residents impacting on the park which was unacceptable.

This absolutely fits with what Cllrs Jack Hopkins and Jane Edbrooke feel with respect to all the developments in Vauxhall, "Improvements to Green and Open space, is not the same as increasing more Green and Open space,"

We both congratulate local residents and specifically Viva Vauxhall and Friends of Vauxhall Park, who mounted an impressive challenge to the Octave Tower.

VNEB – Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Opportunity Area

Vauxhall will radically change over the next 20 years, starting now with a number of large scale developments planned at Vauxhall and around the gyratory, stretching down Wandsworth and Nine Elms Lane. These will ultimately provide over 16,000 new homes, 25,000 new jobs and a new extension to the Northern Line. It is anticipatedf there will be up to 9,000 new residents in Oval ward alone!

We have been taking a lead to put the community at the heart of this process. Most importantly we want to make sure the community help to shape where benefits to the area are delivered and what benefits we want to see.

We lobbied officers to further engage representatives from local community groups and
residents association. On the 12th planners briefed residents and representatives from local community groups on details of each scheme and how the Lambeth/Wandsworth project board will operate.

We have been attending meetings with key local groups to ask how they would like to be involved and their aspirations for the developments.

Oval Labour Councillors back local residents

Residents were last night disappointed that Lambeth's Licensing Committee granted a late night licence to a night club pub in a residential area on South Lambeth Road.

Local residents and the local Labour Councillors came to the committee to complain that the Wheatsheaf pub, previously well run, was applying to turn itself into a live music venue with a 3am finish!

Before 2 petitions from local residents had been submitted they had been asking for 5am!

Local residents and Cllr Jack Hopkins spoke against the late finish, arguing that the noise and nuisance created would directly impact on the residents of Walton Close, Henry, James and Leslie Houses, not to mention the parade of houses next door.

However the committee decided instead to simply 'condition' the bar - they will have to have a security guard and not allow people in or out past midnight, or to drink and eat in the garden past midnight.

They will still be allowed to play live music until all hours, great on Clapham High Street. Not so great if you live behind or next to the night club.

Whether the new night club can keep to these arrangements remains to be seen. Labour Councillors and local residents will keep an eye on it but if you are a local resident and feel that the noise and nuisance is too much in the early hours then you can ring the Noise Nuisance Team:

Tonight I had the pleasure of going to St John The Divine Church in Kennington to a fund-raising concert in the name of local charity Robes.

This beautiful local church provided fantastic acoustics for an inspiring concert with music from www.sonantensemble.com as well as a few carols for residents to join in on.

The Robes Project provides emergency accommodation for homeless people during the coldest months of the winter every year. They operate for 5 months a year, from November - March.

Oval Safer Neighbourhood Team

At the Safer Neighbourhood Team Panel on the 7th December there were a number of topics discussed:
1) Attacks and mugging on the midnight walk path through Kennington Park
2) Ward priorities
3) Operation Hannah, the Police's proposals to support local policing

With the Friends of Kennington Path invited we discussed the spate of serious attacks on residents in the early hours using the Kennington Night path cut through. Nearly 30 attacks, some exceedingly serious, have occurred and the geography and inability to police the path 24 hours a day has led gangs of young people to see this as easy pickings.

Oval Labour is pushing for it to be closed immediately until a solution can be found which will guarantee the safety of the general public. However a number of local residents are campaigning to keep it open, threatening legal challenge if it is closed.

It is not clear that most people are aware of the attacks and signage highlighting the dangers of the park are being put in as soon as possible, even if this damages the hard won reputation of the park.

We will continue to push for the pathway to be closed at the same time as the park, but until then we seriously advise people to add an extra 5 minutes to their journey home and use safer main roads around the side of the park.

To this end Kennington Night Path discussions are ongoing and it is going to be added to the 3 ward priorities.

Also a priority is drug dealing and ASB at the base of Bannerman House and on Ashmole Estate generally. The third priority is Vauxhall Street Population issues .

We also heard about Operation Hannah, a pilot to restructure the Police and strengthen safer neighbourhood Teams. Oval's Labour Councillors welcome extra local Police officers as long as they are actually gong to be supporting our local SNT, that the SNT will be remaining in the ward not moved near Waterloo and that the terms and conditions being proposed by the Police do not mean that we lose our existing team.

Rememberance Sunday

Today I was privileged to lay a wreath on behalf of Lambeth Council at the Kennington Park memorial.

It was great to see so many residents come out from Lambeth and Southwark to remember those who gave their lives protecting us.

It was also moving to remember those who have lost their lives in more recent years including those in Iraq and Afghanistan - especially for me as I'm from a military family, my father and brother both serving in the RAF.

I have long supported the British Legion and want to thank them for doing a fabulous job supporting service families.

Kennington Park memorial

Today I had the privilege of attending the memorial ceremony in Kennington park to remember those who died when a bomb hit an air raid shelter in the park.

Rose bushes were planted by representatives of Lambeth and Southwark councils, as well as a relative of the victims and local school children.

Gordon and the friends of Kennington Park did an amazing job - thank you.

Kennington Park Blitz Tragedy and Memorial this Saturday

I was excited to see a BBC article on Kennington's forgotten Blitz tragedy - only those who know Gordon and the Friends of Kennington Park know the tragedy is far from forgotten.

We will be at the short ceremony to mark the 70th anniversary of the event in Kennington Park at noon on Saturday 16 October 2010 at the memorial stone.

Tonight I went along to the Oval Stadium Monitoring Group - the meeting provides a forum for communication between Surrey County Cricket Club and their local community stakeholders.

LOCAL VOLUNTEERS GET HANDS DIRTY AS PART OF CO-OP COUNCIL

A group of local residents were joined by Labour Councillors from Oval and Stockwell Wards this weekend (Saturday 2 October) to help support a youth project in Stockwell and demonstrate some of the ways people can get involved in the co-operative model that Lambeth Council is currently piloting.

The volunteers took part in a new scheme that is being piloted by Stockwell Labour Party, called “Labour’s community action team” (1) to get its members and other residents involved in donating their time to help out with local charities and projects.

The group spent a day helping out at the Oasis Children’s Venture(2) in Stockwell, a charity which runs a number of projects to help young people including an adventure playground, a nature garden and a go-kart track.

The volunteers helped out with painting signs, clearing overgrowing trees and building a ‘living wall’ from compost. The work wasn’t just of benefit to the children that use the playground though - a passageway that runs along the site (between Larkhall Lane and Priory Grove) was cleared of overhanging foliage improving the look and security of the alley which is used by many Stockwell residents.

Councillor Imogen Walker, Labour member for Stockwell said, “It was fantastic to see what a difference just giving a few hours of your time can make to a local charity like Oasis. They provided the tools and advice so that the people who came could play their part in a scheme that relies on the support of many volunteers. This is just the start of our community action team who will be out on a regular basis doing our bit to contribute to improving our local area.

Morgan McSweeney who helped organise the volunteers said, “We would like to thank everyone who took part in the event from the local residents, the councillors and Jess and the other staff at Oasis for making it such a success. If you would like Labour’s community action team to come help with a project you’re involved in, please get in touch.”

Visit to covent garden Market in vauxhall

On monday I had the privilege of having a tour around covent garden flower and fruit and veg Market. It's taken me a few days to recover from the early start but it was great to see the Market and traders in action.

The Market moved to vauxhall in the 70's and is still a hub of local employment.

There are changes afoot as they hope to rebuild to a more fit for purpose market- and I'm interested to hear residents views. The proposals are happening in the middle of the nine elms opportunity area- and I was passionate in conversations with the CE that 'opportunity' needs to refer to local existing residents- not only businesses. I think our existing businesses are open to this and we need to reflect the needs of local communities in development plans.

Interestingly lambeth transport forum last week picked up on the opportunity area and the plans for an extention to the northern line. Oval residents are vocal in rightly demanding that the transport infrastructure needs developing along with any development- and again it's useful to hear from residents their views.

Statement on triangle adventure playground

We firmly believe that all young people in Oval deserve access to suitable, free, open play space which is fit for purpose.

The Triangle Adventure Playground is a well loved local play amenity and the fifty years of provision is thanks to the generous time and resources donated by local residents.

We want to work with the Council and Archbishop Tenisons School to keep the adventure playground open.

We have expressed this view to Councillor Pete Robbins (Cabinet Member for Children and Young People) and Councillor Steve Reed (Leader of the Council). We urge the Council and school to negotiate an agreement that ensures children on the Ashmole and Bolney Meadow Estates and local streets can play safely locally.

Oval gets hire bikes under new scheme

Today the new London cycle hire network was launched.

Under the scheme you pay a small subscription and get to use the bikes which are in docking stations all over central london. Journeys under 30min are free.

I've been excited about the launch, having seen the scheme in action in Paris.

So today I used my new fob to cycle on a hire bike from victoria to Oval. There are Oval docking stations at Vauxhall, kennington road and kennington lane.

It was slower than I'm used to, as I'm normally on a racer, but no need for a lock or cycle clothes so very convenient.

I hope Oval residents enjoy the new scheme and let us know your thoughts.

Local Students and Oval Labour Supporting Fair Trade

On Friday Oval Councillors Jack Hopkins and Jane Edbrooke met young people from Lilian Baylis Technology School to accept a petition to the Council calling on it use more Fair Trade and discuss their campaign.

As part of their work on civic activity the students have formed a committee and are looking for ways to encourage the use of Fair Trade products in Lambeth.

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world – and is especially relevant in Lambeth where we are privileged to have such a diverse population, many of whom have roots in South America, Asia and Africa.

Jack and Jane will be handing the petition to the Council and have offered their support to their campaign.

New play place and garden for Kennington Park estate residents

Yesterday myself and jack went to a celebration to mark the installation of new play equipment for the younger children on the kennington park estate in the play space between Alverstone and Lockwood houses.

The play space was designed by the children themselves and the opening was celebrated by residents young and old.

There is also a garden for adults, which is named after Grace Lown, a much loved resident and community activist who recently passed away recently.

Launch of a new play area and community garden at Mawbey Brough Estate

In the past two years, Lambeth has secured over £2.5 million of new investment to develop 28 play areas across the Borough. All works are due to be completed by 31 March 2011.

Today we attended the launch of a new play area and community Garden at Mawbey Brough Estate in Oval ward.

The project is part of year two of the Play Pathfinder Programme and is the first Play Pathfinder housing estate project to reach completion. The launch celebrated the development of a brand new community space in the heart of the estate for all to enjoy.

The park and the launch were a real testimony to the hard work of Mawbey Brough Tenants and Residents Association.

Lib Dems threaten 30% council tax hike

The Lib Dems have published a manifesto for Lambeth that is a tax-hikers charter and yet, bizarrely, offers almost nothing new for local people.

Lib Dem spending plans would require a massive 30% leap in council tax – costing the average household an extra £1500 in Lib Dem taxes. That level of increase is entirely in line with the 40% increase the Lib Dems imposed last time they ran Lambeth between 2002-6. They drove that tax rise through despite an election pledge not to impose any increases without a referendum – a promise they simply ignored. The tax-addicted councillor who oversaw the tax-hike policy is now the Lib Dem leader, Cllr Ashley Lumsden and he appears determined to continue where he left off, after voters threw his party out of power.

Apart from the tax hiking plans, the Lib Dem manifesto is bizarrely empty of new ideas. It has nothing to say about a long list of key concerns for local people. The Lib Dems say nothing about how they would pay for road resurfacing or repair potholes, nothing on how they would tackle anti-social behaviour, and nothing on key proposals for new leisure centres in Clapham, Streatham, West Norwood, Kennington and Waterloo. Labour has detailed what we would do and how we would pay for it in all these areas.

Labour’s leader Cllr Steve Reed said: “The Lib Dem manifesto is an empty box with a huge price tag attached. Local people will be walloped with a massive 30% Lib Dem council tax rise straight after the election, but will have almost nothing to show for the extra £1500 that will cost the average household. Brixton customer service centre

I've just come from renewing my parking permit at Brixton cumstomer service centre and was really pleased with the amazingly quick service.

My book went entouched as friendly staff quickly pointed me in the direction (I pre booked an appointment via phone this morning using the new system) and I barely got to appreciate the very modern and nice waiting area!

Candidates listen to local issues

As usual Oval candidates Jack, Karim and Jane were out and about in Oval this weekend.

We spoke to a number of residents about their local priorities and concerns. In particular residents on Fentiman Road voiced concerns on the speed of traffic up the quiet residential street - as people use it as a cut through from Clapham Road to South Lambeth Road. Karim, Jack and Jane will be taking up this issue with Lambeth Council and will report back with how residents can make their voice heard.

Boris's plans to block Ovals views

Tonight Oval labour candidates Jane Edbrooke and Jack Hopkins attended the Kennington, Oval and Vauxhall (KOV) Forum www.kovforum.org.uk .

The meetings was dominated by the presentation from GLA officers on the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area Planning Framework. Residents welcomed the idea of a co-ordinated approach to planned development in Vauxhall and along to Battersea - and it's status as an opportunity area. However, residents strongly voiced their concerns over plans to build a number of high rise buildings(referred to as a tall building cluster). These buildings will be up to 150m (which is 30-50 floors), near Vauxhall - dramatically changing the London skyline, not to mention residents views.

Jane also voiced concern that all over the proposed 16,000 residential units were high-rise flats - not family homes, and would welcome a more family friendly mixed development.'

Residents felt there are many more issues to address, including transport demand, in these plans and asked officers to return to the Vauxhall area to give more residents the chance to repond to this consultation. We will keep this blog up to date with any additional consultation meetings

Oval Action Team brave the cold to talk to residents!

On Sunday 10th January Oval ward candidates Karim, Jack and Jane were joined by their colleagues to brave the cold to speak to residents on the Wyvil Estate.

A number of residents were experiencing boiler problems - and the action team were happy to speak to the Council on their behalf to tackle any issues, especially given the current weather conditions!

Labour’s Safer Neighbourhood Team Making Sure your Street is Safer

Labour Council candidate Jack Hopkins met with the Oval Safer Neighbourhood police team and local community activists to raise concerns over crime and anti-social behaviour across the Oval ward.

The group discussed the actions that the local Police are doing to make the whole ward safe, in particular Wilcox Road and Wyvil Estate, South Lambeth Estate and the Kennington Park Estate. The dispersal zone has been successful so far in moving on trouble makers on Dorset Road but the Police are going to continue working with local residents and shopkeepers to make sure they don’t come back.

Jack also raised the concern of Ashmole Estate residents’ about school children causing mischief at lunch time and after school. The local Police team have promised to look into it and assess whether they can put on extra patrols.

Labour’s Safer Neighbourhood Team reassess the key local priorities every three months so get in touch and let us know about your top priorities so Labour can make your concerns are dealt with.

Labour plants roots in Vauxhall Park

Jack Hopkins, Labour Council Candidate in Oval, joined Labour activists and the Friends of Vauxhall Park for a day of bulb and tree planting.

Over 30 men, women and local children braved the wet and windy conditions to clear and plant a beautiful bulb patch due to flower in Spring 2010. The volunteers also planted a number of trees around the park ready for the New Year.

The Friends of Vauxhall Park are a voluntary group who protect and enhance the park for the benefit of all local residents. Annual membership costs just £3 for individuals, £2 for the unwaged and £5 for family membership. Visit their websiehttp://www.vauxhallpark.org.uk/

The Friends also hold community events, Easter egg hunts and maintain the fabric of the park for all local residents. Please consider joining and coming along to meet your neighbours at their next tree planting and urban gardening programme!
